Given the current political climate many are recommending that police departments be defunded, and those funds be routed to other services. It is not clear what these means or what it looks like. In fact of the 16 departments (possibly more by the time you read this) that have been defunded and each one was very unique. Your assignment is to select two departments and review available literature on those departments. Your review of the literature can also include research articles that have been done on defunded programs. You will need to explain, in detail, what the configuration of the police department in each of the localities you have selected was before it was defunded. Then explain why it was defunded and the details of what that city or county did including how much money was moved outof the police department, where it was applied and very importantly where are they now. You will find that this is not one static answer. Many departments defunded, and later partially or fully refunded. In those cases, explain why and how that came to be. What caused the local government to reverse their original initiative (if they did). Some have not refunded but there are clear outcomes, be sure and include them. For instance, a department is defunded, and violent crime increased. This is important to any jurisdiction that is considering defunding their police department there is a lot to be learned from the experience of other localities. Write a section on each localities including the important points noted above. Include a conclusion paragraph where you compare the two. Perhaps they each had similar experiences and there are negative outcomes. Then some would have a negative experience and another a positive experience. In this case note why you believe the successful locality had a positive outcome.
