For the Comparative Essay, explain Huhndorfs argument concerning what she labels going Native. Then choose one of the chapters to focus on more closely and compare Huhndorfs interpretation to Delorias. As we will see in class, there is a great deal of similarity, but there are also important differences. Since Huhndorf is a literary scholar, she is discussing interpretations of society as expressed in literature, which she uses as a window into the cultural ethos. Where a historians evidence is primary documents; her evidence is works of literature. Deloria is a historian, and thus he is using traditional historical evidence. Nevertheless, they are both analyzing the same phenomenon and often in the same contexts. For example, they both discuss modernity, gender, and the Boy Scouts of America (chapters 3 and 4 in Deloria; chapter 2 in Huhndorf) and they both discuss the counter-culture and the New Age (chapter 6 in Deloria; chapter 4 in Huhndorf).
