Matthew (for Activity #3)
In Matthew 5-7, Jesus preaches what is famously known as the “Sermon on the Mount.” The preaching-teaching of Jesus in this section of Matthew are a mix of wisdom sayings (like the beatitudes and being salt and light) and scriiptural teaching.
In Matthew 5:17-48, specifically, Jesus presents teaching about the Law and the Prophets, that is, his Jewish Scriptures. Read Matthew 5:17-20 and make personal notes: What is Jesus’ understanding of the Law and its ongoing importance for community life?
To explore Jesus’ community teaching further, compare some texts below. Make personal notes about how these teachings are similar and different. Which texts ask more of the community members?
● Matthew 5:21-26 and Exodus 20:13
● Matthew 5:31-32 and Deuteronomy 24:1-4
● Matthew 5:38-42 and Leviticus 24:17-21
● Matthew 5:43-48 and Leviticus 19:18, Psalm 139:19-22, and Proverbs 25:21-22
For Activity # 3, post 150 words on Moodle in response to the following prompt:
Reflect on how these teachings of Jesus compare with those in the Torah/Hebrew Scriptures. For example, does Jesus negate the original teachings? Are his teachings harder or easier to follow? How do Jesus’ teachings live out his understanding of the Law and the Prophets in Matthew 5:17-20?
