The focus of this Unit was world governments. The focus of this assignment is comparing authoritarian regimes to modern democracies.
Research the history of Colombia being under a republic government; some questions to consider:
How long has the country had an authoritarian government? Is it currently under authoritarian rule?
What circumstances caused the authoritarian state? Was there mass poverty or starvation? Was a previous dictator or royal family overthrown?
How did people receive the authoritarian government? Did they support it? Did they try to overthrow it?
Did social, political, and economic conditions improve or become worse under authoritarian rule?
Were people’s freedoms restricted under authoritarian rule? How?
How do the social, political, and economic conditions of the country under authoritarian rule compare to those you experience in the U.S.? Do you have more or less freedom? More or less political power? More or less economic advantage? Explain your answers.
Based on your comparisons, do you think there are advantages to living in an authoritarian nation versus living in a democracy? Explain your answer.
