Feel free to experiment with the various modes of writing that we will encounter, such as diary, travelogue, first person, third person, male voice, female voice, etc.
You can use any perspective, focus on any element of modernity, and any setting in East Asia during the modern era. You can write an original story, a pre/sequel to one we have covered, or even re-interpret a story from a different angle.
The story – The actual work of fiction should range between 10-12 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font. I will be grading you on comprehension of your chosen form of modernity, as well as your interpretation of how this specific form of East Asian modernity impacted gender/sexuality.
You should choose the setting carefully as you do not want to include anachronistic elements in your story. You are welcome to write about time periods that we do not cover in class, such as post-war Japan or Communist China.
The story must address at least one theme or topic that we have covered in class. The annotated bibliography – This will be your works cited page for the short story, but with a description of each source and how it fits into your research.
You are required to include at least two primary sources (autobiography, fiction, newspaper, etc.), and a minimum of three secondary sources (literary analysis, articles or books that provide historical/cultural background, etc.).
With each bibliographical entry, describe in a short paragraph what this work is about, the significance in the field (if applicable), the author’s background, and how it has shaped your project/research. You can use any style you like (MLA, APA), just make sure the formatting is consistent throughout the assignment.
