Firstly please carefully read the assignment proforma and the case studies I have written for you. All the guidelines for the formulary are in purple and you will need to delete this before you hand it in. This guidance is comprehensive. Similarly you will see that there are guidance questions at the bottom of each case study. These are to guide your writing in order to achieve the learning outcomes. Remember that this is a short essay of 1500 words. You don’t have many words to play with so stick closely to the case study and the guidance questions. We have written the case studies to fit the word limit, so if you think you are writing too many words you are most likely going outside of the learning outcomes being assessed. Remember that the case study is assessing the medicines management learning outcomes. So you don’t need to explain the detailed pharmacology of the drugs in this section. This is about the care of the patient and how we go about administering and managing medications safely and effectively.
Secondly it is important to remember that the formulary is where you will demonstrate that you have learnt about pharmacology. That is drug actions, side effects, interactions and the pharmacology we have been teaching you. You have a word limit here too, and this is to help you learn only the important information about the drugs. Pick the important points about the drugs to put in your formulary. Remember you are handing in 5 drugs picked from the Padlet you are working on in class. We suggest that you pick the drugs you see in your practice, but you can choose any from the Padlet list. We have deliberately included drugs used in Adult, CYP and Mental health nursing so that you can make the most of learning the drugs you will use in practice. This formulary is designed for you to keep working on and expand throughout your nursing career.
We would ask you not to cross reference Part A (formulary) with Part B (case study). Please write these as separate pieces of work. You should not feel the need to do this because Part A is assessing your pharmacology knowledge, and Part B is assessing your understanding of medicines management. So there is no need to cross reference between Part A and B.
Some of you are finding the reading list very long. Please don’t worry about reading everything. It is there for you as a guide, and to introduce you to a selection of useful references. If you feel you want to go beyond the teaching, the reading is there for you. Pick the books you find helpful and use them to consolidate your knowledge. Please do start with the reading list for your referencing for your assignment. I have given you plenty to get you started and I encourage you to use these in your written work. You will see in my notes on the reading list where I have sign posted you to helpful material for your assignment. So use these first and then go and search for additional peer reviewed papers and books to widen the breadth of your reading as you see the need to in your work. Remember not to use patient information websites as these are not academic quality.

We have a final live lecture with you where we will go over the assignment, and you have two drop in zoom meetings with me where I will answer questions about the assignment at the end of the unit.

Intended Learning Outcomes

3. Apply and employ knowledge and skills related to the principles of safe administration and drug calculations to the care of individuals from childhood through adulthood.
4. Discuss analyse and evaluate the ethical/legal and professional regulatory frameworks that inform medicines management including for people living with co-morbidity, polypharmacy, drug misuse and life limiting chronic conditions along the life and development continuum.
