Utilitarian theory, discussed in Chapter 8, has had a profound effect during the past two centuries upon social reform and the shaping of public policy (Boss 2019, p. 242). The influence of utilitarianism has been widespread in the United States and other democracies, especially in the fields of law, politics, and economics. For this assignment, you will provide pro and con arguments for three controversial issues and provide a conclusion based on utilitarian theory.
Assignment:
1) Follow the detailed instructions in the What Would a Utilitarian Think? Download What Would a Utilitarian Think? worksheet.
2) In the column where you describe pro and con arguments, be sure your information is correct and can be backed up by objective research. (Be careful about stating what you believe is the truth about these particular issues, but may actually be an opinion not based on fact.)
Remember: Using facts (avoiding opinions or fallacies) is one of the most important components of critical thinking, analysis, and argumentation.
3) In the column where you explain what you think would be the position of a utilitarian, avoid superficial conclusions such as simply stating because it will create more happiness.
Show that you have critically analyzed the question.
