Your assignment for this week (due Sunday at midnight) is to locate five full-text, peer-reviewed journal articles that address instructional, management, or and assessment strategies that you will incorporate in the 10-lesson unit that you will develop later in this course. One of the articles must be an action research article and one must be an article written as “traditional research.” The other three articles can be either type of research.
Consider the following questions as you select your topic:
1. What are some instruction, assessment, or management strategies that you have used or observed? What strategies do you want to know more about so that you can improve your practice? A few topics on which you might focus your search are below, but feel welcome to focus on a topic that is of interest to you!
differentiated instruction, using technology to enhance instruction, strategies to increase student engagement, grading practices, standards-based grading, formative assessment strategies, summative assessment, problem-based learning and assessment, etc.
2. Choose one topic and locate five articles that focus on that topic.
After you select your journal articles, you will compose an annotated bibliography.
What does an annotated bibliography include?
Citation–A list of citations to articles.
Format–Uses precise format specified for the assignment.
Evidence–Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150-200 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraphs, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.
Summary–A brief summary, including the source’s strengths and weaknesses and conclusions.
Analysis–A discussion of the sources and how they relate to the topic and other studies in the field.
Language–Use precise, domain-specific vocabulary to discuss the sources.
Refer to the Annotated Bibliography grading rubric in in this module for how you will be assessed on this assignment. In each summary of your annotated bibliography, be sure to address each of the following areas:
Evidence (20%)–Each source should be identified as sufficient and credible for the topic.
Summary (20%)–Your writing should present accurate, clear summaries of each of the sources with the main idea and key supporting details of each source.
Analysis (20%)–Your writing should demonstrate a critical analysis and discussion of each source. Include why you selected this source and how it relates to the topic. You should also draw connections between your sources and broader ideas in the topic.
Language (20%)–Your writing should use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to discuss the sources.
Citation (10%)–Your writing should follow the APA bibliographic format to cite the sources.
This assignment will be a “Turnitin” assignment.
What is Turnitin?
Turnitin is a “text-matching” software which is designed to educate students regarding appropriate citation and referencing techniques. Upon submission of your document, Turnitin checks your writing for citation mistakes or inappropriate copying. When you upload your paper in Moodle for grading, it will automatically be sent through Turnitin’s repository, with no need to log in separately at Turnitin.com. The similarity report that it generates will also help identify possible instances of plagiarism. You can check your work prior to submitting it for grading and then re-submit it (if appropriate).
What does the percentage on my Turnitin similarity (or originality) report mean?
Excessive similarity in student papers is often simply due to improper paraphrasing and/or excessive quoting. Refer to this webpage on the Turnitin website for more information on interpreting the similarity report: https://help.turnitin.com/originality-check/turnitin-website/student/the-similarity-report/interpreting-the-similarity-report.htm?Highlight=similarity%20report.
What is the acceptable percentage for Turnitin?
The acceptable Turnitin percentage is anything below 15% in the similarity report. A Turnitin plagiarism score of 15% and below shows that your paper is original. It also shows that your work is underpinned by enough sources, especially when well-cited and referenced.
Ways to Reduce Similarity on Turnitin:
Cite your sources to avoid plagiarism. All academic papers should have both in-text citations and a reference, a bibliography, or a works cited page.
Use quotation marks (” . . .”) around every word, sentence, or multiple sentences that have been quoted from another source to reduce similarity. This is very important because, without the application of quotation marks, Turnitin will perceived the borrowed text as plagiarism.
Avoid too many quotes. Too many quotations means that you have not dedicated enough time to do your paper.
Paraphrase thoroughly to remove plagiarism. Since you aim to reduce similarity in Turnitin, you should use your own words to explain what the original text is putting forward. Such words should not be very similar to the words used by the original text. You should note that using synonyms is not paraphrasing.
Avoid copying word-to-word.
Can I update and resubmit my assignment after reviewing my Originality Report?
This depends on how your instructor has created your Turnitin assignment. In this course, you may submit your assignments to Turnitin, review your originality report, make any necessary modifications to your assignment, and then resubmit your assignment as many times as desired (as long as it is before the due date.). The first three submissions should generate a new similarity report instantly. Any subsequent submissions will incur a 24-hour delay between reports generating. Any resubmissions will overwrite the previously uploaded file.
Formatting Your Annotated Bibliography:
Be sure to review the resources to format your bibliography to include citations in the section of this course titled “APA Formatting.”
