This assignment’s minimum length is 750 words of body text (ie. not counting your header or Works Cited page). No more than 10% of your paper can be someone else’s words. If more than 75 words of your paper are quoting me or others, your grade will suffer. Papers should be in a standard 12-point font (eg. Times New Roman or Cambria), with 1”x 1” margins, and double–spaced.
Pages must be numbered and labeled according to MLA conventions. Your first page should include your name, the date, the course, and the name of your instructor in the top left corner.
Be taking grammar, spelling, and structure into account—good ideas cannot be communicated with poor form. If the grammar or structure in this paper is severely flawed in such a way that your thesis and arguments cannot be conveyed, Reserve the right to fail the paper.
Directions for the Midterm Paper Papers should thoroughly address one of the two options below in a double-spaced, 3-4 page essay (750-1000 words, not counting your Works Cited). Papers of insufficient length will receive a penalty up to a possible grade of zero.
Submit your completed paper on ONE of the following options here by attaching a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file that follows the standards for papers listed at the link below. Research for Midterm Paper If, after reviewing our Writing Standards & Policies, you still have questions about sources, please visit the TJC Library for more information.
Also, recall there are Essay Writing Tools on the Modules page. Additionally, bear in mind that Wikipedia, History.com, dictionaries, and study websites (eg. quizlet) are not scholarly sources. Using sources like these will cause your grade to suffer.
Finally, know that you must correctly cite and use the sources on your Works Cited page in the body text of your paper to receive ANY credit for the “Research” portion of your grade.
Without engaging with outside sources through multiple in-text citations, you are not fulfilling the standard of college-level research required for this assignment and will receive a zero for research.
Again, if you have any questions about research, please contact the TJC Library, take a look at our department’s library sources pageLinks to an external site., and review the MLA requirements for citation on the Purdue OWLLinks to an external site. site.
Option 2: Sacred Truth Consider the early Greek concept of fate (p. 60), the play “Oedipus the King” (p. 108), and the Greco-Roman philosophy of Stoicism (p. 133).
What can these artistic and philosophical expressions tell us about the Greco-Roman view of life and our control over it? You will be graded on how well you use the above three representations in your paper.
Be mindful also to stick to the prompt and don’t indulge in personal politics, religious views, etc, as I will not be evaluating you on your identity or the politics or communities to which you belong.
Rather, do your best to aim for an objective, neutral, academic viewpoint. A. Step-by-Step Instructions for Page 1 First of all, please do not copy or repeat any portion of the prompt (as doing so pads your word count and will lower your grade).
Second, be sure you have an appropriate MLA header, title, and pagination. In the body text of the first page, you need to thoroughly describe the three cultural artifacts or ideas in the prompt.
Adding additional examples not found in the prompt will improve your grade, but be sure to adequately engage with these three artifacts first. I will primarily be grading this portion of your paper to evaluate how well you’re engaging with the assigned reading.
Be sure also to correctly cite each artifact from the textbook. I will be looking for you to offer cultural context for each of these artifacts or ideas — ie., don’t just say “Egypt” or “Greece,” but show me from your engagement with the assigned readings that you understand what’s special and unique about these ancient places.
B. Step-by-Step Instructions for Page 2 For Page 2, I want you to thoroughly engage the question posed by each option.
If you choose Option 1, explain how these cultural examples and others represent the importance of women in the ancient world. If you choose Option 2, explain how these cultural examples and others express the Greco-Roman view of life (and our control or lack thereof).
This step will certainly require outside research in addition to a thorough engagement and citation of your textbook. Focus on how these artifacts express the beliefs and attitudes of their ancient societies.
C. Step-by-Step Instructions for Page 3 Going into Page 3, explain the impact of these artifacts on ancient society. How was their society shaped by ideas of the sacred feminine or sacred truth, and how do these specific artifacts exemplify that? Then, in closing your paper, please explain the impact of these artifacts on our modern society. How have ancient ideas of the sacred feminine or the Greco-Roman worldview shaped our world today? What evidence in modern society remains of their ancient influence? What were the consequences of these artifacts and ideas, and how are they still relevant to our world now?
