Defining Ethical Egoism
Ethical egoism is a normative theory that purports that each individual ought to exclusively pursue his/her own self†interest. The theory supports the promotion of one’s personal welfare or self†interest while assisting others. The theory further asserts that the interest of others is important, especially if it benefits the actor.
Drawbacks of Ethical Egoism
As a theory, there are some drawbacks to be considered. The claim that self†interest is the only motivator is often challenged. Also, the theory tends to ignore wrongdoing in the name of self-interest. Like Ethical subjectivism, ethical egoism does not provide a guide as to how conflicts may be resolved.
