You have just watched the movie “Mississippi Burning” with Gene Hackman and Willem
DaFoe. Describe in your own words what this story was about. Why specifically did
the federal government get involved? (Both the FBI and military)
What civil rights and civil liberties issues surfaced during the movie? (Make sure you do
not simply list them.) Explain them and tell me if they are civil rights or civil liberty
violations. **This should be the major part of your paper. (At least 4 of each
minimum)
What is the mentality behind racism and bigotry? Why do some people think this is
perfectly acceptable behavior?
In your opinion, is it our government’s job to right society’s social wrongs? Were
national laws needed? (Think about issues such as racism, poverty, alternate lifestyles,
etc.) Why or why not?
Remember, there are several ways to answer these questions. However, issues such as
“due process” and “equal justice under the law” should be well thought out and discussed
by you in detail. I recommend writing this paper with a copy of the Bill of Rights and
14th Amendment next to it for reference.
