The sociological imagination challenges one to see how an individual biography is shaped by the larger social contexts of the moment in history—including culture, social relationships, and social institutions. This sociological autobiography project asks you to analyze your own life from a sociological perspective. Your aim in this project is to put your life in its broader historical, structural, and/or cultural context. How has your life experience been shaped by the broader society in which you live and by your social position in that society? In using a sociological lens to analyze your life, you should develop a discussion of your social class, race/ethnicity, gender, and one other course concept, issue, or institution we have covered in class. Your essay should be organized as follows:
1. INTRODUCTION
2. SOCIAL CLASS: Describe how your social class background has shaped the social contexts of your life. Some questions to consider are: How has class limited or enhanced your life chances and access to important goods in society? How has class shaped the communities you have lived in and the institutions you have had access to? How has class affected your social networks, lifestyles, and worldviews?
3. RACE/ETHNICITY: Apply the sociological insights you have gained from our readings and discussions of race/ethnicity and gender to discuss your own experiences, opportunities, and/or identity. In considering these questions, you might start by reflecting on the following questions:
• When were you first aware of yourself as a member of a particular group? For example, when did you begin to define yourself in terms of race in a certain way?
• When were you aware of other races?
• When did you first witness someone being treated differently based on race?
• What are significant events in your life related to race or racism?
4. GENDER: How has gender influenced your life? Do you face any issues specific to your gender? How has your gender impacted your life chances, aspirations, relationships, and your presentation of self?
5. ADDITIONAL COURSE ISSUE: You should choose and discuss in your paper at least one additional issue that we covered in this course: sexual orientation, family, politics, socialization, presentation of self, deviance and crime, education, health care, etc. (You may write about more than one of these if you wish.)
6. CONCLUSION: Summarize the main points of your essay. What insight have you gained through applying the sociological perspective to your own life?
COURSE MATERIALS: To develop your analysis, you should cite at least six course readings in your papers(although you may include more). Cite the page number and reading author or lecture date for course concepts.
