Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to produce an extensive academic essay in the form of a traditional researched argument. As part of this essay, you will learn how to narrow topics and find useful sources for support of an extensive argument.
Skills — The purpose of the assignment is to help you practice the following skills
Limiting topics
Researching using databases
Learning advanced research methods in online search engines
Producing an annotated bibliography
Integrating sources for argument (BEAM)
Fully developing and organizing a longer essay (6 ½ to 8 pages)
Knowledge — This assignment will help you become familiar with the following:
Boolean Operators
Natural Language Search
What the purpose of an annotated bibliography is and how to produce annotations
How to organize an essay and implement ethos, logos, and pathos in your own essay
How to integrate quotations into argument
How to determine credible sources
Task: Write an original essay in which you provide a clear, logical argument for or against a current policy issue or law:
Pick a specific policy issue or law. (*The issue may be local, regional, state, or federal.)
Topics must be specific — legalization of marijuana, abortion, global warming, gun control, or the death penalty are much, much too broad, for example.
Provide your argument either for or against this issue/legislation/policy (or portions of it).
Integrate a minimum of 5 credible sources.
