Assignment Data is gathered routinely in the field of healthcare. It is often shared publicly once it has been stripped of any personally identifiable information such as the datasets found on HealthData.gov (opens in new window). When demographics are included in the data collection, we are able to analyze the social impact of illness on segments of the population.
A dataset is provided for this assignment which was found on HealthData.gov using the keywords of “COVID, educational attainment, deaths, age, race, sex.” This assignment provides an opportunity for you to examine the data and to put it into a visual format that makes it more accessible by a non-health sciences reader.
You will practice using data analysis tools to examine and briefly summarize a subset of the data. You will also find a scholarly/authoritative article that is related to the demographic you select in the dataset to turn into a visual representation. Follow the steps below to complete this assignment by the specified deadline. Connect with Tech Support for assistance in using the tools required for this assignment, as well as the video tutorials provided in the resources.
Download AH Provisional COVID-19 Deaths by Educational Attainment Race Sex and Age (opens in new window) dataset and save it as a new file to be able to edit it.
Review the dataset and choose a column of data that describes a demographic data point you are interested in analyzing further such as age, gender, race/ethnicity or educational attainment compared.
Use the sort function to sort the dataset by the demographic column you are interested in. You will be able to view the breakdown of data for that particular group.
Choose the second column in that sorted subset that lists numerical values related to that demographic such as the number of hospitalizations, deaths, diagnosed illnesses, etc.

Follow the video tutorial Excel Quick and Simple Charts Tutorial provided below to use the Chart feature in Excel to insert a bar chart in a new sheet within the worksheet. If you do not have Excel, upload the provided file to GoogleSheets and reference the video tutorial Google Sheets – Column Charts, Bar Chart with Line & Trendline Tutorial provided below to use the Chart feature to insert a bar chart (on a new worksheet or GoogleSheet within the same file) that will help visualize the data. Review The Beginner’s Guide to Excel – Excel Basics Tutorial video provided below or contact Tech Support for assistance with Excel or GoogleSheets functions.
Once the chart displays on the Excel worksheet or GoogleSheet, edit its title and labels in the chart to accurately describe the data set.
(Optional step) Now click twice on the bar within the chart that represents your age group (or another demographic data point that represents you such as gender, race/ethnicity, educational attainment, etc.). Right-click to change the Fill color of just that bar to call attention to it.
Save the file in a .xlsx (or .xls) format with your name in the filename. If you are using Google Sheets, select Download from the File menu and choose the Excel .xlsx or .xls option to save it to your computer or laptop changing its filename to include your name.
