Please use one of the following prompts:
Analysis of a Scene – Choose a single scene from the film that you believe is especially significant. Carefully analyze what occurs in that scene and compose an argument that:
a. Makes a claim about what that scene suggests about an abstract concept, such as gender, sexuality, power, violence, etc.
b. Makes a claim about that scene’s significance within the larger text of the film. c. Both a and b
Address a Pressing Question – In the first paragraph, articulate an interpretive question about the film, and then argue for what you believe to be the answer. For instance, you might ask:
How should we understand the concept of monstrosity in Calibre?
Should The VVitch be read as a supernatural film or a hallucinatory one?
How does It Follows adhere to the slasher genre? How does it deviate
from it?
In what ways does Somerset seem to empathize with John Doe in Seven? What does Fincher seem to be
telling us about society and/or humanity?
Whichever prompt you choose, your essay must contain a thesis statement (please put in bold) that introduces the focus of the paper, and that is arguable. In other words, a classmate or someone else who has seen the film should be able to reasonably disagree with your central claim.
