Background The policy change example from Minneapolis in the lesson illustrates how important it is for social workers to collaborate with community leaders, policy and decision-makers in their community so when a policy change is needed, the foundation has already been established in terms of how social workers bring a unique skillset to a problem or concern in a community. As you begin to think about the focus you want to take in addressing a problem or concern in your community, it’s important for you to look at the local news coverage in your area. This will help you develop an understanding of what types of problems or concern are covered (or not covered) in different parts of the community and what kinds of solutions, programs, etc have been developed or already exist. Suggested Sources: local TN news channels; local newspaper; local news websites Identify the area of focus you would like to look at for the Community Innovation Project; you should be clear here in the “why” of the focus and provide supporting data. Find 4 local news articles about the social issue you want to address in your community for the Community Innovation Project. Articles should be from within the last 6 months. Summarize the key findings (2-3 pages, double-spaced, APA format) and clearly identify the social issue or aspect of that issue you want to address for the course project. You must include the URLs for each article cited in APA format in the reference page at the end of the paper. references must be from social work journals (see list of journals under Additional Resources).
