Throughout this Novel Study Unit, characters and historical figures speak up for change. But how
they speak up, and what they speak up for, varies from text to text.
Examine the anchor and comparative texts. What motivates people to speak their minds?
Desperation? Inspiration? Fear? Anger? Love? Or something else? Choose one source of motivation.
Select one
character from the anchor text and at least one character or person from a comparative text who
spoke up for change because of the source of motivation you identified. Then conduct outside
research on a historical figure who was similarly motivated. As you collect and synthesize your
evidence, think about how each of these characters and people used their feelings to both express
their desire for change and to make that change a reality.
You can pick who you want – I was thinking Starr Carter – To Martin Lurther King Jr.
