Environmental and Occupational Health Risk Assessment 1950-502 The Assignment Report
The purpose of this assignment is to assess students’ reflection on principles, concepts and implications taught in the class. Students will search, read and review published studies on a selected environmental agent and then submit an academically written report summarizing different aspects of environmental health risk assessment related to the agent with a focus on the Kuwaiti context. The written statement of ~2500-3000 words. Please read Parts A-C below for the complete your report.

The agent is : mercury
1. Background

1.1. Chemical, physical (or biological) properties, synthesis, origin, source(s) of the agent.
1.2. Forms in the environment, life cycle, release to the environment, persistence, potential pollution to water, food, and air. How contamination happens in general and then locally here in Kuwait.
1.3. Uses and applications of the agent, e.g., in industry or in consumer products.

2. Scale of the problem/exposure of the human population
2.1. The prevalence/scale of the agent exposure/existence: how prevalent in worldwide and here in Kuwait. Here it is important to provide statistics.
2.2. How human population are exposed to the agent/contaminants, especially here in Kuwait.

3. Risk assessment
3.1. Using the four steps of risk assessment that we learned, describe how each step can be conducted on the agent. For example, for hazard identification step, you need to summarize (in your own language) studies which identified health risks associated with the agent. And for the exposure assessment step, describe how human exposure happens and how we can assess exposure. For risk characterization, summarize studies which reported estimated health risk in the population of exposure to the agent (e.g. cancer risk in population from dioxin exposure)
3.2. In Doing this you need to focus on the MAJOR health risk/disease the agent causes based on epidemiological studies.

4. Solutions/future perspectives
4.1. A brief description of the possible alternatives/solutions that can be implemented to better manage the risks of the environmental agent and reduce human/environmental impacts.

5. Conclusions
5.1. In less than 100 words summarize concisely and precisely all of the above concepts (1-5).
5.2. The reader of this abstract should clearly understand the environmental health management aspect of the issue/agent.

C. Format and style
-Double space text using font size of 12. Use clear scientific English. The report must contain an academically written statement of ~2500-3000 words that excluding references, figures, and tables.
-For any piece of scientific information, cite the reference (mainly journal article or book) used to retrieve the information. Number references in the order they appear in the text. The reference list should come after the main text (not included in the total word requirement).
-High quality figures and illustrations as well as tables should be included at the end of the report after the references. You should indicate the place in the text where the figure or table is supposed to be placed.
*IMPORTANT NOTES:
-Cover all the topics under titles and subtitles in pages 1-2. These sections will be marked based on how well you cover each subtitle. Inclusion of data as tables figures is encouraged.
-Use your own language, and don’t summarize article by article. Read several relevant articles and then synthesize the relevant text citing those articles.
