Write an 1100 word essay reflecting on and analyzing one of this semester’s pre-Christian texts.
The reflection paper should make an argument for why one or a group of pre-Christian texts should be valued in a Christian context. Please note that the paper should NOT argue primarily for why Christians should avoid one or more of such texts, nor should it merely explain how such texts present ideas contrary to Christian perspectives. Rather, the paper should help a Christian audience recognize what in our literary readings may be valuable from a Christian perspective. Consider, for instance, the fact that even without divine revelation, all human beings live in God’s creation, and thus cannot escape recognizing certain truths about it and God. Because the paper is a reflection, part of the argument should synthesize a reflection on your reactions with your analysis of your chosen text(s). You should show awareness of in-class-discussion matters, and, although you are not required to, you may use these steps to help you draft your reflection:
Choose a reading from the pre-Christian works for the class and explain how some aspect of it (e.g. a character, theme, etc.) exhibits values similar to Christian ones.
Clearly define such values and the criteria for recognizing them. Rather than making up your own, use definitions from scholarly sources that discuss such matters specifically.
Refer to specific passages that evince the definitions established above.
Reflect on those qualities in the work—your reactions to them and your reactions to the work itself.
Identify, also, specific, legitimate objections Christians may have.
Explain how such legitimate objections, rising from a Christian perspective, could be ameliorated by understanding the material according to the definitions of goodness, truth, beauty, etc. established earlier.
Although no literary research is required, use good judgment in properly citing material when establishing facts, definitions, etc.
The paper should be around 1100 words, and must be formatted according to MLA or Chicago/Turabian style.Write an 1100 word essay reflecting on and analyzing one of this semester’s pre-Christian texts.
