Essay-“Bad” Employee DESC Script Start Assignment

Preparation: You identified 3 characteristics and behaviors of a “bad” employee back in Unit 3. Now you must performance manage the employee’s behavior using the DESC model in Bb Handouts. We practiced DESC in an earlier unit.

For full points, you must manage all of the “bad” behaviors you previously identified. For full points you must address each element of the DESC rubric for each identified behavior.

This assignment may cause you to rethink your original post on the characteristics. A “bad” behavior must be identified with specificity: what does the employee do that you need to change? if a manager can’t specifically describe the undesirable behavior and why it is detrimental to the organization, then the manager cannot effectively performance. This assignment is designed to help you create a strategy to define and address behaviors you may encounter in your workplace.

Essay:

Name the behavior, briefly describe the behavior. You must manage the behaviors you identified in the “bad” employee post. Clearly state the behavior or characteristic that you are managing at the beginning of each DESC script.
For instance: Absenteeism; Sick Leave Abuse. You may clarify or specify the behavior in more detail than you first submitted in your earlier assignment.

For each of the characteristics you identified, draft the DESC conversation you will initiate with the employee. Note that you must only draft what you, the manager, will say; you do not need to speculate on what the employee will say in return (though you probably have an idea whether the employee will respond defiantly, agreeably, argumentatively, apologetically, etc….).
The DESC script is your plan for a performance management discussion. These conversations are difficult for new managers, which is why issues frequently go unaddressed; some students identified this type of conflict as a difficult part of management, and it is.

A rubric for conversation empowers you, makes the situation more predictible, ensures that you cover all relevant management requirements with the employee, in addition to complying with 7-Steps principles before terminating a poor performer, or someone with behavioral problems.

Example:

Gossiping; This employee spends a lot of time visiting with co-workers about non-work matters. I have observed excessive visiting, and some colleagues have complained that he is gossiping.

D….

E….

S…

C..

These are the three characteristics that I listed
1. bad employee is never on time.
2. Bad employees ALWAYS HAVE EXCUSES and complain about everything.
3. The “know it all” type of employee.
