Case example: A 20-year-old male comes in to your office seeking treatment for depression. Upon initial interview, you, the provider, ask the individual about how he came to know about the depression that he is endorsing. The client discusses how he went in to see his primary care physician for a routine medical exam and blood work. After the consultation, the doctor shared that the client seemed to be depressed.
From this example, please describe how you would go about communicating with this client. Please address the following:
What you would do if this client entered with a diagnosis from a primary care doctor?
Would you accept this diagnosis as a working diagnosis, or would you discuss diagnostic criteria? Explain.
What psychoeducation would you offer on diagnosis provided by primary care doctors if any? Explain.
Discuss if you feel the client is identifying or labeling himself.
Detail how you would go about assisting the client in healing past the label.
