This week’s reading and lecture addresses issues related to health, and covers how health, medicine, and public policy are all interconnected with culture. The lecture mentioned several topics of interest for those of use in health related occupations: Cultural-Bound disorders, such as anorexia Gender and health Alternative Medicine and culture specific beliefs Socio-economic influence on healthcare outcomes – infant mortality rates, access to primary care etc. Drawing from your own life and work experience, what do you think is the most pressing health related issue that needs to be addressed in the US or the world today? Why do you think this issue is more important than any other? Using the concepts you’ve learned about in this course, how do you think a sociologist might approach the research or study of this topic? What theoretical concepts would be applicable? Are there any other social or cultural issues at play that might be contributing factor to this health issue? NB: I am in the military
