Abortion Case
The rate of abortion is about 11 per 1000 women a year. The most common reason for obtaining an abortion is for economic issues.
Imagine a 17-year-old client comes to you for counseling and tells you she is pregnant and wants to terminate the pregnancy. The client is Latina and comes from a wealthy family. The client is ready to go to college the following year. The client reports being religious (catholic) and is struggling with this decision and her faith. Her parents do not yet know she is pregnant. She tells you she is planning to do it this week.
How does such a client impact your own beliefs around abortion?
How would you work with this client in session? What theoretical lens may be most appropriate?
How would you bracket your own beliefs or feelings about this clients decision in order to meet the client where she is at?
What ethical issues surround this case given the clients age?
