Discussion 1 (TWO POSTS required. 300 word minimum for first post. Click here to see the discussion rubric for how the forum will be evaluated)
In this discussion thread students are required to post AT LEAST TWICE.
At the end of this week, students should be fairly clear on how to do the following:
How might the Somerset Case be considered related to the painting Dido Elizabeth Belle and Lady Elizabeth Murray?
How might the paintings Dido Elizabeth Belle and The Slave Ship be interpreted as in some ways related–and perhaps contrasted?
How is the Atlantic Slave trade related to both the above paintings?
How might the abolitionist movement in England be consider related to both these paintings?
Identify important periods in history of Saint Paul’s Cathedral, e.g., distinguish between Reformation era and modern era.
Distinguish between the Anglican Church and the Catholic Church
Describe architectural features of Saint Paul’s.
Describe the Age of the Enlightenment.
FIRST POST (minimum 300 words)
Select at least ONE of these topics (you may select more if you wish), and then do the following:
Explain at least two key points or ideas that address that particular learning outcome:
For instance, if you describe the Age of Enlightenment, identify at least two key ideas that describe the Enlightenment and explain. Or, if you interpret how the paintings Dido Elizabeth Belle and The Slave Ship are related, identify two ways the paintings are related (or contrasted) and explain.
Also, If you learned something interesting this week, something that jumped out at you, briefly explain what that is. Why is this interesting to you?
SECOND POST (you may post as often as you like)
Respond to the post of another student. Clarify and expand. Ask a question and initiate a dialogue.
THIS IS WHO I WANT YOU TO RESPOND TO.

Welcome to week two everyone!
For many, the Enlightenment represented three main values that together brought optimism in the form of belief in progress: 1) social equality, 2) social justice, and 3) a thorough revamping of society. In art, as we will see, neoclassicism embodied these values.
Not everyone agreed, however, and some in fact saw the Enlightenment as bringing the opposite of those ideals. In art, as we will also see, Romanticism was such a reaction to this and its’ embodiment in Neoclassicism. The philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau was a staunch critic of the Enlightenment and what he saw as its negative repercussions.
First, I would like to share a video lecture summarizing the philosophy of the Enlightenment before moving on to the art of the time to lay the groundwork for these intellectual ideas.
