Address that people suffering with mental illnesses are more vulnerable to factors that lead to homelessness such as poverty and substance abuse. There are mental illnesses that restrict an individual’s capacity to work, and therefore it is difficult to earn a stable income. Additionally cognitive and behavioral issues cause individuals to disconnect from their family and those who are close to them hence there is a lack of support surrounding them and lesser resources to help them recover/cope. Studies have shown that people living with mental health issues turn towards substance use as a way to cope. Hence, individuals who experience the combination of these factors due to mental illnesses have higher chances of being homeless and experiencing poverty. In return, experiencing homelessness, it continues to have poor effects on mental health because it amplifies mental illnesses people may already have. This may include substance use, depression, and anxiety. There are possible solutions to help those who experience this, for instance, addressing basic needs, having accessible care and supportive programs.
