Part 1 Based on the information from the readings this week, identify at least three cultural differences between you and your students (or colleagues/peers if you are not teaching) that might affect teaching and learning. Afterward, describe ways that you could obtain background information on your students including the languages they speak, cultural considerations, family circumstances, and life histories. Finally, describe at least three things the teacher can do to ease newcomers into routines in the classroom when they know very little English. Part 2 Review Table 1.1 "Cultural Content and Questions" on page 15 of Peregoy & Boyle (2017). Choose a culture other than your own to research. Select at least 4 of the topics listed in the left column to investigate. Use the questions in Table 1.1 (Peregoy & Boyle, 2017, p.15) as a guide to discovering new information about this culture in regards to the specific cultural content listed in the chart. List similarities and/or differences between your culture and the culture you decided to research in regards to each topic. How might these similarities or differences affect your teaching or interaction with people from this culture? Please use a table to format your information. You can use the table below as a guide for creating your own in a Microsoft Word document. If you need help creating a table, you can use MS Office support to help guide you. There are also many tutorial videos on YouTube and other sites that can help you as well. Be sure to cite the sources you use using APA in-text/parenthetical citations within your writing in the table. Do not merely copy and paste information. I want you to show that you have synthesized information about the culture you are researching and thinking about how cultural issues can affect teaching and learning. Here is an example introduction and table: My culture: _________ Culture I’m investigating: ________ Cultural Content Information on _____ Culture Important Similarities and Differences Affects on teaching and learning Food Report what you find about this topic for the culture you select. Think about your own culture. What are some important similarities and/or differences? How might these similarities/differences affect teaching and learning?Show more
