The media frequently reports that there are blood shortages, not only in our area, but nation-wide. In these times of need, there are patients who go without needed blood products due to unavailability. We have learned about the donor screening process and the testing required for blood components to ensure safety for the recipient. Afterall, the purpose of transfusion is to improve the condition of the patient. Some in the blood banking field have proposed loosening restrictions on donors in an effort to increase the nation’s blood supply. Fewer restrictions would allow for the collection and distribution of more blood products. This may make it easier for patients in need to get the life-saving treatment they need. What do you think about donor restrictions? Should restrictions be lifted and the donation process be made easier? Are the current standards sufficient for blood collection and testing? Should donor restrictions be tightened even further? For this assignment, take a side in this debate and compose a positional statement. Seek to persuade other healthcare professionals to your position. Use your knowledge of donor screening and component testing to back up your argument. In addition, you should use general laboratory knowledge that you have gained from other courses in the program. You must also consult at least two outside references (in addition to the lecture notes and course textbook) to support your argument. Cite your reference at the end of your paper in APA format. This submission should be no less than 750 words, Times New Roman, 12 point font, double-spaced. Your final product will be due in Lesson 7 as a Microsoft Word or PDF document.
