2.1 Complex care 1: Assessing and planning
Introduction
This module aims to provide you with the knowledge and strategies to develop problem-solving and decision-making skills. These skills will enable you to undertake the assessment and planning of complex situations and health conditions across the life span in a variety of nursing settings.
Building on the skills developed in the level four modules you will learn about: detection, analysis and interpretation as part of the assessment process and how to escalate assessment findings appropriately. As part of this process, you will become skilled in individual need identification and both family and person-centred care plan development. You will have a good understanding of identified physiological systems that may impact a patient. Throughout this module, you will be required to build on your existing communication skills and apply professional principles such as the duty of candour to complex, challenging and sensitive health care situations. You will also consider meeting care needs in relation to the legal principles of consent and capacity.
Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate the ability to accurately gather and process all information from the assessment process to identify needs for planning individualised nursing care.
Use evidence-based assessment tools and accurately interpret their findings and take appropriate actions when planning care.
Compare and contrast the communication skills required to care for people with health problems and their families in complex, challenging and sensitive heath care situations.
Examine the principles of courage, transparency and professional duty of candour within the demands of professional practice for individuals with complex healthcare needs and their families
The Module Case Studies
Four case studies have been woven throughout the module, as a means of helping to translate the concepts and theories of complex nursing assessment into the world of practice. You will need to choose one of these case studies when completing your assignment. Click on the links below and you will meet Maggie, Semina, Anton and Matilda
