Analyze the following article from the Boston Review: https://bostonreview.net/articles/amy-moran-thomas-pulse-oximeter/ FORMAT & ORGANIZATION Your analysis should be a detailed paragraph (approx. 200-250 words in length). Please use 12-point font and single space your work. The opening and conclusion should be brief (no more than a sentence or two). In your analysis paragraph, use transitions to show the relationship between ideas and achieve paragraph coherence. o Examples of sentences with transitions: o “Moran-Thomas also claims…” (sentence elaborating on an idea) o “She suggests this because…” (sentence offering an explanation/reason) o “For example, the author…” (sentence providing support) 1 CONTENT & STRUCTURE In your analysis, you are evaluating HOW the author has presented the information to readers. (Don’t simply tell me WHAT the author has to say. That’s a summary—not an analysis.) Opening of analysis: • In a sentence or two, identify the article’s audience, purpose, and context. • Reference the author and title of the article in your opening. o Example: In “How a popular medical device encodes racial bias,” Moran-Thomas [explains/argues] that… Body of analysis: • Objectively explain how the author supports her claims with facts, examples, reasons, and/or testimony. • Support your analysis with specific examples from the article. You may provide brief quotes to help the reader understand what you are analyzing. • When providing examples from the article, be sure to o Identify the type of support being used. o Explain which of the author’s claims the support relates to. o Discuss why the author uses this support. For instance, how is the author trying to convince readers? What does the support help readers understand? • If you refer to a passage in the article or quote the author, include an APA citation at the end of the sentence with the author’s last name, the year the article was published, and the paragraph number the information/quote appears in. o Example: The author explains… (Moran-Thomas, 2020, para. 4). Note: You are not being asked to provide a full analysis of the article. (In other words, do not try to analyze every claim and use of support.) Instead, offer a couple of observations/points (the most insightful or notable ones). Similarly, ensure you adequately support each observation/point—but don’t include several examples/quotes from the article. One or two is sufficient.
