a. Based on the Theoretical Evaluation Self-Test, what are your predominant theoretical orientations? Do you agree with the results? What factors do you believe have influenced your theoretical orientation?
b. How does having a theoretical orientation prepare a counselor to practice ethically?
c. It is common practice to make a diagnosis of a client. Discuss some of the pros and cons of diagnosis. Do you think you should share a client’s diagnosis with him/her? Why or why not?
2. This week’s focus is on ethical issues that come up when working with couples, families, and groups. Refer to the textbook and the articles posted in this week’s folder to help you respond to these questions.
a. How might feminist therapy techniques be useful when working with a couple or family? What ethical issues could arise when employing feminist techniques?
b. Power and privilege are issues that play out in group therapy. Things like gender, race, and age (among other factors) can influence group dynamics because people of various identities traditionally have more power or privilege. What kind of issues related to power and privilege might come up in a group therapy setting? As a counselor leading a group, how might you handle these issues?
