You are 75 years of age and have been married to your wife for the past 50 years. Your wife is a diabetic and is insulin dependent, requiring multiple insulin injections and blood glucose monitoring several times a day. Three years ago, you were diagnosed with Macular Degeneration, a condition in which your eyesight gradually deteriorates to virtual blindness. Two days ago, your wife fell and broke her hip. She is now hospitalized, but will be coming home in about two weeks, after a short-term stay in an area rehabilitation center. She will require assistance in bathing, dressing, using the bathroom and in maintaining and testing her blood glucose levels. You have approximately $20,000 in savings and own your own home, currently valued at about $250.000. You are both retired and receive approximately $2100.00 per month in Social Security Retirement Benefits. You have two adult children, but they are both living several hundred miles away with families of their own. Medicare will provide you with about 8 hours of home nursing care each day for about two months. You and your wife are desperate to maintain you independence. You are beginning to feel that you will not be able to meet your wifes health care needs by yourself. What plans can you make for the future?
