General directions: You will choose 2 of the broad theories that we have been studying that you feel are a good match for you, and will be helpful in your current or future career. If you are not certain of your career path, choose a field in Human Services to write about. (See directions for choosing theories later in this module.) You will use your textbook with specific quotes to support your ideas. Be sure to cite the textbook correctly by indicating the page numbers where quotes are found. Quoting and referencing other credible academic sources besides just your course textbook is expected for this paper (along with proper citations for these sources) Keep in mind that by choosing two theories and writing this paper you are not claiming you are already proficient in these theories! You are also not committing yourself to something for life. I am looking for your thoughts on which of them generally match your personality and client population. Choose 2 of the 6 numbered theories below. Once you have chosen your 2 broad theories, you may discuss one or more types within that theory. For example, if you choose cognitive as one of your theories, you may discuss one (such as REBT) or more (REBT and Reality, etc.) types of that theory, and then you must pick another of the remaining 5 theories (such as humanistic) and discuss one (such as person-centered) or more (person-centered and existential) types of that theory. You do not need to discuss all the subtypes of the theory. Psychoanalytic Behavioral Cognitive (includes CT, REBT, CBM, Multimodal, Reality & Adlerian) Humanistic (includes Person-centered, Existential & Gestalt) Systemic (includes Family Systems & Narrative) Brief (such as Solution-focused Brief Therapy) Using your textbook and other source material, describe each of the 2 broad theories you have chosen. At a minimum respond to the following for each theory: Brief overview of the main tenets of the theory, including its historical development and leaders. Describe how people change according to this theory Describe the techniques used and how they lead to change Explain what type of client/situation this theory may be good for, and what type of client/situation this theoretical approach may not be helpful for. Explain why you think these theories fit your personality and population. Describe your current or planned career, including what population you hope to be working with (i.e. children, adults, those with addictions, those with developmental disabilities, etc.). Describe how each theory you discuss will work, or not work well with your vocational population and setting. Papers should be a minimum of 1,500 words, not including direct quotes, titles, or citations. Please remember to correctly provide citations (including in-text citations) for all sources used. Papers should be proof-read in addition to using a spell checker. Grading will be based on the following: clear understanding of each theory, correct explanation of techniques, realistic and detailed examples using client population, writing style and mechanics.
