The rise of slavery in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries transformed African, Caribbean, American, and European economies and societies, and fundamentally shaped the social, racial, and cultural composition of the greater Caribbean. Challenging and dismantling the institution of slavery were transformative developments for the late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Caribbean societies. The end of slavery in the Caribbean (as a whole) progressed unevenly across the region, driven by imperial and colonial policies, moral norms, revolutions and independence movements, and changing economic situations. How did enslaved and free black peoples resist slavery in their various Caribbean societies? What major events inside and outside the Caribbean contributed to the movement to abolish slavery? In what ways (i.e. actions, arguments) did Caribbean slaveholders attempt to maintain the institution and resist/counteract efforts to end slavery?
