Write a literary analysis essay for Sir Gawain and the Green Knight on one of the
following topics:
1. Novels and plays often include scenes of weddings, funerals, parties, and other
social events. These scenes may reveal the values of the characters and the society in
which they live. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight includes several scenes like these.
Discuss the contribution festive scene(s) make to the meaning of the work as a whole.
2. In some works of literature, a character who appears briefly, or does not appear at
all, is a significant presence. Looking at Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, write an essay
in which you show how one such character functions in the work. You may wish to
discuss how the character affects action, theme, or the development of other characters.
3. In many works of fiction, a physical journey – the literal movement from one
place to another – plays a central role in the story. Compare and contrast Sir Gawain’s
journey with another fictional hero of your choice (from a book, movie, TV show, video
game, etc.). Describe how these characters’ journeys add to the meaning of your chosen
story and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as a whole.
