Design and conduct an experiment of your choice using
data already available or easily available (ie, DO NOT experimentally change something!). For
example, you can measure how your heart rate changes before and after walking to your car
but YOU CANNOT measure what happens if you drink 3 Redbulls (assuming you do not
normally drink three Redbulls). Although potentially interesting, experiments (particularly on
humans) can legally, morally, medically be dangerous.
Find a question around your house that can be answered using the scientific method. For
example, is your heart rate higher in the morning or in the afternoon? Are door knobs on the
outside of your house higher than door knobs on the inside of your house? Does your favorite
backyard plant have larger leaves near the bottom or than near the top? Do people in your
family weigh more in the morning or at night? Anything along those lines. DO NOT conduct any
experiments where you change or manipulate any living organism (again, you cannot study the
effects of drinking too much Redbull!). Preferably with a sample size of 10 measurements in
each group. If you arent sure, ask.
1) State your hypothesis? (1 point)
2) What is your dependent variable? (1 point)
3) What is your independent variable? (1 point)
4) Explain the design and basic methods of your experiment (1 point)
5) Take a picture showing at least some aspect of your project and what you measured.
YOU need to be in the picture measuring something related to your project (2 points):
6) Make a graph showing the difference (if any) between your two groups. This bar graph
should have only two bars (one for the average of one group, one for the average of the
other group). Make your graph in excel or in google sheets. We have done this
throughout the semester and you should be able to make a simple graph at this point
digitally (2 points).
7) Was your hypothesis correct or incorrect? Why do you think so? (1 point)
8) If you COULD change something and manipulate a variable (which you cannot in this
case) what would be? (1 point)
