Ethical conflicts may result when laws and policies are perceived as unfair or biased, and moral distress may result.
Watch Episode 3 video again. SUMMARY: Ms. Joan, a 62-year-old woman recovering from a stroke, faces challenges due to her limited hospital stay covered by insurance—only three days. She requires outpatient occupational therapy to regain basic skills like showering and cooking, as she has no use of her right arm. Joan also plays a significant role in her family, caring for her grandchildren by babysitting and driving them to school. With her current condition, she cannot fulfill these responsibilities, adding strain on her family.
The hospital staff, including Megan (the nurse leader), Kenny, Mario, and Flora, are in a dilemma. Flora argues that Joan should remain in the hospital longer to give her family time to arrange care and ensure her safety. However, Megan and Kenny highlight the need to discharge Joan, citing overcrowding, a shortage of staff, and the increased risk of infection for long-term patients. They stress that outpatient care is more suitable for Joan’s recovery. Meanwhile, the hospital must also consider its financial challenges and the demand for beds for critically ill patients. This scenario demonstrates the ethical and logistical conflicts that arise in healthcare decision-making.
