The essay should mainly be about how the MTA is being underfunded. The underfunding of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and its impacts on society and stakeholders would fall under the broader global issue of urban infrastructure and sustainable development. Urban infrastructure encompasses various elements crucial for the functioning of cities, including transportation systems, water and sanitation, energy, and telecommunications. Sustainable development aims to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The underfunding of urban infrastructure, such as public transit systems like the MTA, poses significant challenges to achieving sustainable development goals. It affects not only the efficiency and accessibility of transportation within cities but also has broader implications for economic prosperity, social equity, and environmental sustainability. Therefore, addressing the underfunding of urban infrastructure is essential for promoting sustainable development globally, ensuring that cities remain hubs of opportunity, prosperity, and well-being for current and future generations.
The format I usually use for my essays is as follows:

– Hook to engage reader
– Introducing talking points
– Thesis statement at end of introduction
Body Paragraphs-
*Your talking points should be revolving around each of the questions asked in the prompt
*The body paragraphs should be dedicated to answering the questions
Format

– Explaining evidence
– Evidence #2
– Explaining evidence #2
– Summarizing talking point
Conclusion –
– Reestablishing talking points and thesis, final statement on hinting towards a solution to the issue. When hinting towards the solution it should be about 2 sentences.
– When hitting towards a solution, don’t get too specific as that will be used for the next essay for this course as that’s exactly what it will be about. A solution to the problem discussed in this essay.
I will also be interviewing an MTA staff official in addition to my essay. The following are the questions that I will be asking during the interview:
-How has the level of funding for the MTA evolved over the past decade, and what factors have influenced these changes?
-Can you outline some of the key areas where underfunding has had the most significant impact on the MTA’s operations and services?
-What specific challenges does the MTA face due to underfunding in terms of maintaining and modernizing its infrastructure?
-How does underfunding affect the safety and reliability of MTA services, and what measures are being taken to address these concerns?
-What strategies does the MTA employ to mitigate the effects of underfunding on fare affordability for riders?
-How does the underfunding of the MTA impact the accessibility of transportation services for disadvantaged communities within New York City?
-Can you discuss any initiatives or partnerships the MTA has undertaken to secure additional funding or support for its operations and infrastructure projects?
-How does the underfunding of the MTA compare to similar challenges faced by public transit agencies in other major cities globally?
-What are the long-term consequences of continued underfunding for the MTA, both in terms of service quality and its ability to contribute to sustainable urban development?
-How can policymakers and the public work together to address the underfunding issue and ensure the long-term viability of the MTA as a critical component of New York City’s transportation infrastructure?
Hopefully this gives you insight on the path or direction the essay should take throughout it. You do not have to directly answer these questions in the essay but you can use it to help get a better sense of what you should be writing about.
Hope the format helps. I also provided the rubric in additional materials. Please contact me if you need any more information to help you.
