Presentation and Essay Purpose
– You will be assigned a sociological topic pertaining to the course based on a list of topics that you provided on the topic selection assignment.
– This is an opportunity for you to further explore any relevant issue that may only briefly be touched upon in class and to educate your fellow students about the topic.
– You will be completing a presentation and essay in order to work on developing your communication skills.

Essay Expectations
• You will be writing a 3-8 page essay on your presentation and essay topic.
• Your essay should cover your portion of the presentation. Provide a well-rounded essay that reflects your knowledge and explains things as if you are writing for someone who knows nothing about the topic.
• The essay can be informative or persuasive but not opinionated.
• The essay should not contain personal opinions or be written in first person. No I statements.
• This essay must be written in APA format
• Your due date for the essay and presentation are listed on the syllabus and your actual presentation date will be provided by week 3
• Your essay must be turned in to the assignment in D2L on the due date or you will lose points. If there is a problem turning it in then it should be emailed to me so that it is marked on time.
• Late policy- You will lose 10% if your essay is late but turned in within 24 hours of the due date. You will lose 30% if it is turned in more than 24 hours late but less than 48 hours late. After it is over 48 hours late you will lose 50% of the points beyond the points you lost for other mistakes and it will not be accepted after a week late.
• Your essay will not be accepted if it has plagiarism. You have to cite within the text and have a work cited at the end of your essay.
• You must use the feedback provided on your annotated bibliography, thesis statement assignment, outline and rough draft.

Section #1- Content- 30 pts.
• Covers 4-5 points
• Demonstrates knowledge and research on each of them through the explanation and use of citation.
• Identifies and explains each point so that the reader can understand and follow the lines of reasoning.
• Makes points and uses resources not easily found or already known to most.
• Uses research studies and information provided by authorities in the field to prove each point.
• Contains a strong introduction providing background on the topic and ending with a strong conclusion which reminds the reader of the major point and leaves a good impression of the writer’s capabilities.

Section #2- Essay Structure- 20 pts.
• 3-8 full pages
• Font no larger than 12 and in Times New Roman
• Includes- introduction, thesis, conclusion, body paragraphs and good transitions between paragraphs.
• Written to the standard of a college essay.
• Clear, focused, unified and coherent organization.
• Well-structured sentences.
• Excluding I statements and personal opinions.
• No large spaces between paragraphs or at the beginning of the essay
• Uses feedback from annotated bibliography, thesis statement assignment, outline and essay rough draft

Section #3- Critical Analysis- 30 pts.
• Formulates a clear and precise personal point of view; draws support from experience and information not available from assigned sources.
• Displays substantial depth of thought that thoroughly explores issues
• Accurately identifies and interprets major alternative points of view
• Identifies and assesses the quality of supporting data/evidence and provides additional data/evidence pro/con related to the issues.
• Identifies and assess conclusions, implications, consequences and limitations of solutions and conclusions.
• Applies concepts and theories learned in discussions and the textbook.
• This is not a literature review so you should not copy and paste large sections of text from your sources and paste them into your essay and does not write paragraphs that simply explain the findings of one source. You should only use the citation that is needed to back up your points.
