I. Examine a fictional media representation of regional, social, or ethnic dialects and the characters that use them. You may choose a book, film, play, or another piece of work (with prior approval). This brief report will analyze how sociolinguistic factors (race/ethnicity, class, gender, language/language variety, age, etc.) relate to language as depicted through the characters, scenes, and contexts.
II. You should reference concepts or theories from the course materials and discussion; therefore, this is not a review or a summary of the book or film you chose. Instead, it is your analysis of how the sociolinguistic factors portrayed the characters.
III. In a short Google or PowerPoint voice-over recording (around 10 minutes) briefly summarize the novel or media work and describe the linguistic and sociolinguistic features it shows. You may want to “quote a section of the work, to provide an example of your analysis. (provide voice notes only)
IV. In your presentation, determine how language is used and how/if it is used differently among or between characters. Give specific examples to support your generalizations and provide references to your readings supporting your analysis.
