Context: How do we judge between what is just and unjust, fair and unfair, in society? Is justice the same as fairness? Can we have one without the other, or are they synonyms? And by what means to we address major examples of injustice and unfairness? We tend to read about social justice issues of the past with a proud numbness, pitying those who have suffered and thanking God for our collective moral advancement since then. But this kind of thinking often blinds us to the social justice issues that are right under our noses. We must discuss social justice reflectively and with humility, lest we allow ourselves to be part of a problem we want to eradicate in theory. How are issues of justice and/or fairness addressed in the texts mirrored in contemporary culture today? Assignment: Using at least one reading from the current unit, one reading from the entire semester (including the current unit), and CREDIBLE outside research, assert and defend a contestable position on identifying and improving a current social justice issue.
