As many of us know, caring deeply about social issues isn’t always enough to get us into the streets. In fact, research demonstrates the importance of social networks and/or targeted recruitment efforts by social movement organizations in motivating people to engage in collective action.
Interview 3-4 people in your immediate circle of family and friends about their experiences with deciding to participate—or not—in activism. Write a 6-8 page essay that (a) describes the main themes that come up in your interviews and (b) analyzes those themes in light of at least two of the assigned readings from Weeks 4 and 5.
