Our first assignment will be a 2-3 page current event analysis on an example of your choice.
The aim of this assignment is to practice using an intersectional lens to “read” a particular event.
Your paper should answer the following points:
● Any current event within the last 6 months
● Using Patricia Hill Collin’s “interlocking oppressions”, which of the 3 facets of oppression
are present in the example you’ve chosen? (individual, structural, symbolic)
● Explain what systems, processes, categories, and identities are at work in the piece
you’ve chosen. Use Dahmoon’s piece and try to “ask the other question” (Matsuda) to
get to some of the less apparent forces in the example.
● Examine who the major actors are in your example? Which groups are potentially
impacted and how? What are the future implications stemming from the example you
chose be it cultural, legislative, environmental, etc.
● Include a bibliography/works cited for all pieces mentioned in your analysis including
the example you’ve chosen. Please use a minimum of four sources. Sources from
class count toward this number.
The paper should be 2-3 pages long, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12pt font.
