Section 1: Summary of the Article
In this section you should provide a brief summary of the article your selected. Specifically, chose one of the
thirty articles in the U.N.’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights that you find particularly interesting. In one page or so (400 words) summarize the specific human right that is being covered. The language used in the declaration can be a
bit vague and flowery. Therefore, your goal in this section is to break apart the article and translate it to the reader.
You may also want to point out specific words or phrases that seem particularly unclear or vague.
Clarity of summary: Was the article described in a way that made it easy to understand for the reader?
Completeness of summary: Did the summary contain all of the relevant concept and facts presented in the article?
Section 2: Application of the Article
In this section of the assignment you will apply the human right to the United States and a second country of your choosing. Specifically, begin by discussing how the United States meets (or does not meet) this human right. Next, do the same for another country. Finally, close this section with a discussion of the similarities and/or differences between how these countries approach this human right. Avoid making a judgment or discussing your feelings about which country is better or worse at meeting this human right (you can do this in the following section). This section should consist of one or two pages (600 – 800 words). This section will require you to do some outside research (one or two sources per country will be sufficient). Make sure to cite your sources properly using APA format. This section will be worth 40% of your Writing Assignment #1 grade and will be examined based on the following rubric:
Application to the United States: Was the application of the human right to the United States clear and accurate?
Application to Country #2: Was the application of the human right to the second country clear and accurate?
Comparison: Was the comparison between the two countries clear and logical.
Section 3: Discussion
In the third and final section of this assignment you will briefly discuss what you have learned from doing this
assignment. In about a page (500 words) you should look back over your work and present a discussion of your major
“take-aways”. Some questions you may want to consider:
Do you feel that one country did a better job at meeting this human right than the other?
What do you think is the appropriate way to meet this human right?
How would you change the wording of the article to make it clearer?
