1. The early use of the interdeterminate sentence of parole was known as the Elmira System starting in the 1890’s. Parole was granted to inmates who had served the minimum time for the crimes for which they were convicted of. Before the 20th century, states such as Nebraska, Alabama, Ohio, California, and New York granted parole to first offenders, except offenders who were convicted of murder.
2. Just deserts is known as the punishment one receives or consequences one goes through reflects the crime they have committed. In other words, the severity of the punishment one gets has to be equivalent to that of the severity of the offense/crime committed.
3. The purpose of parole is to maintain the prison in terms of safety and order. Parole is a way to keep prisons safe in terms of not overcrowding them by offering parole to inmates who have completed a portion of their sentence and makes space for new prsioners.
4. The Attica Uprising started on September 8, 1971 and lasted until September 13, 1971. It was a response to an outbreak of prison riots in New York. On September 8, 1971, correction officers tried to discipline two inmates in which were sparring, followed by a confrontation. Correction officers were taken hostage and were beaten in a way to demand better conditions for inmates as their prison conditions were seen as inhumane and ineffective (Abadinsky, p. 131). The Attica Uprising changed the way parole works today because overcrowded prisons are now being taken into consideration and parole is being offered to offenders who are suitable for it, depending on several factors, before making that decision of allowing the offender into society after completing a portion of their sentence.
5. I think the uprising of Attica changed the way our system runs because better prison conditions are being provided in terms of food, health, sleep, no overcrowding of inmates, resources such as rehabilitation programs, education programs, alternatives to incarceration such as parole and probation, etc.
