In Josef Gugler’s paper, as well as the films “Dirty Pretty Things” and “Life is Rosy”
highlight the importance of popular culture in the field of African studies and the African Diaspora.
Discuss arguments about the way in which popular culture increases our understanding of African
History and the African Diaspora. When answering, make sure to do the following things:
A) Explain the
interplay between ideas suggested by Barber and Gugler on the subject of popular culture and at how the
film “Dirty Pretty Things” helps us understand the African Diaspora.
B) Look at the movie “Dirty Pretty
Things”
and explain at least three constituent elements of the African Diaspora. Reminder: Patterson and
Kelley suggest the following five constituent elements: a) “A dispersal from a homeland, often by violent
forces; b) The making of a memory and a vision of that homeland; c) Marginalization in the new location;
dA commitment to the maintenance/restoration of the homeland: e) A desire for return and a continuing
relationship and identity with the homeland.” You are expected to explain how “Dirty Pretty Things
helps us understand three of these constituent elements of the African Diaspora.
