When working with clients, we should work within our area of expertise and skills. Discuss what areas you feel are within and outside your area of expertise in counseling, e.g., substance abuse, physical abuse, mental illness, etc., and identify your training.
Use the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the Human Services Code of Ethics to determine whether you are within and outside your level of expertise. Reference the code of ethics in your explanation. For example: domestic violence, substance abuse, marital counseling, etc.
