Multi-element solar concentradors – controls and feedback mechanisms

Project description: One other potential area of exploration includes multi-element concentrators, which use an array of
smaller mirrors to focus light on a single point of incidence. The solar intensity achievable is scalable
and modular (see image below, courtesy of Ivanpah Power).
These concentration systems require a knowledge of both optics and controls, as solar-tracking and
reflection-pointing require the mirrors to be repositioned as the sun tracks across the sky.
This project will utilize low-cost concave mirror systems of student-design (possible 12+ mirrors) to
achieve high-intensity solar concentration for hot-water (boiler-style) conditioning. This will require
sensors, active control (Arduino?), as well as single or biaxial pointing controls.

Technology study memo instructions: When engineers start working on a new project, the first order of business is to become familiar with past work and information relevant to the project. This might include benchmarking existing technologies, conducting preliminary analysis and calculations, researching patent and literature databases, etc. Prior to meeting with customers and stakeholders, engineers collect and organize information on past work to help understand project objectives. This initial research is used to help set the stage for requirements definition and frame appropriate questions for discussion with project sponsors, stakeholders and colleagues.

While all new projects require creativity, chances are very good that technologies and/or system concepts already exist that can be modified and adapted to meet project requirements. It does not make much sense to “reinvent the wheel. Each individual student is expected to submit a free-standing memo (5 pages double-spaced Times New Roman 12-point font) summarizing your findings to your team and project mentor(s). Students should follow the steps below to share and receive feedback from team members.

Step 1: Each team member conducts background research of prior art and relevant technologies in their assigned area.
My designated area is:
-Control and feedback : Microprocessors and Microcomputers
-Sensors : Light, Temperature, others needed
-Arduino actuators: Power consumption, Step motors, AC vs DC
-Water source: Water purity affects on properties, different types of water have different temperatures of heating
-Industrial or residential use
-other types of controls or sensors used in solar concentrators

Rubric:
Contains much useful information critical for moving forward with the project. Information is well organized with insights and implications for project decisions clearly defined. Appropriate visual elements, such as Tables and Figures, are used.
