What It Means to Be An American
For this journal posting, you should write about what it means to you to be an American. We have read a great many works this semester in which characters wrangle with this issue, or glory in it, or are distressed by it.
What does it mean to you, to your life, to be an American? And, by the way, even if you are not a citizen, you are American for the purposes of this assignment. You are taking this American Literature class. You have read these American works.
You should write a journal on this subject, including quotes from works you have read this semester and how they relate to you and your status as an American. How many quotes and from how many sources you include is up to you, but this will be a major factor in determining how many points you earn. Your entry should be at least 300-500 words. Include a word count. In other words, if you include a quote or two from one source, you will not earn 100 extra points. I am expecting you to include quotes from a number of the different primary works we have covered this semester in your response, and for you to synthesize them into a coherent response. Do not include quotes from works you have not been assigned to read. Do not include quotes from the author biographies, etc. Just the primary works.
