Compare and contrast data and conduct a brief analysis of a health condition.
First pick one public health condition you are really interested in. Examples include topics from the following list (these are just examples – pick what you want):
Cancer (e.g., breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, etc.)
Cardiovascular disease (heart attacks, stokes, etc.) Injury (e.g., gun violence, suicide, car crash etc.)
Be as specific as you can about the disease or health condition you choose. Don’t be overly vague about what you choose or you won’t be able to look up meaningful data about the health condition.
1. What is the state of the health condition you chose in the State of Michigan? A good starting point is the State of Michigan’s Health and Human Services site. Collect a reasonable amount of data that will give you a good feel about your choice of a health condition in Michigan.
2. If possible, check to see if there is any information locally (probably your county’s local health department). Not all local government sites are the same and there is variation in the depth of information available. If there is no information, report that you checked and did not find anything or very much that was valuable.
3. Check on the status of the health condition you chose in another state in the U.S. You can choose any state you like. Check that state’s health website and compare and contrast the information with Michigan’s data.
4. Pick another country (I would recommend a developed country with good data) and report on the health condition you chose, once again, comparing and contrasting with the U.S. and Michigan.
5. Finally, check the status of your health condition with the world – see what the WHO, or other international sites have.
Please use Times New Roman or Franklin Gothic Medium and 12- point font with 1” margins. At the end of your data collection, put your information in tables or charts (I will leave how to best display the data you found up to you). Your data should be displayed neatly and orderly and should be easy to understand. Summarize your data, comparing and contrasting how Michigan’s health status ranks with your chosen health condition locally, in another state, nationally in the U.S., in another country, and globally. You are not expected to write flowery prose, just clean depiction of the data and clearly comparing Michigan with the other entities.
