Assessment is not a separate entity from instruction; it’s an integral part of it. Assessment helps teachers determine whether the education goals are being met, and it should be used by teachers to inform instruction. Gathering relevant assessment data and knowing how to use it is an important skill for a teacher to have and use. This assignment will allow you to showcase your current lesson planning knowledge and understanding.
Prepare for the assignment by selecting:
1 content area
1 early childhood age level (i.e., preschool, kindergarten, or Grades 1, 2, or 3)
Create a developmentally appropriate lesson plan using the Lesson Plan Template or a format of your choice.
Include the following elements in your lesson plan:
Standards and learning objectives:
Select national and/or state standard(s) relevant to your identified grade level and content area.
Write lesson objectives that are specific, measurable, and observable, and align to the standards.
Setting the stage for learning:
Identify way(s) in which you will activate prior knowledge, introduce essential vocabulary, and relate the lesson objectives to the children’s life experiences.
Describe how you will set the lesson’s focus and engage the children.
List up to 3 possible questions related to the content that promote critical thinking.
Materials and technology:
Identify developmentally appropriate materials and instructional resources (e.g., technology, handouts, and guest speakers) needed for the lesson.
Describe how the materials and instructional resources support and enhance the lesson.
Teaching/instructional process:
Modeling Instruction (“I do”):
Describe the step-by-step process that you will use to model the skills and tasks for the children.
Identify developmentally appropriate steps that need to be followed to master the skills and concepts related to the objective(s).
Guided practice (“we do”):
Explain how you will guide the children through the activity to foster oral language and communication through assistance in the guided practice.
Explain how you are employing the tripodal approach (i.e., see/hear/do) so the child is seeing you model, hearing you explain, and demonstrating it with assistance.
Independent practice (“you do”):
Align the independent practice to the objective(s).
Describe what you will have the children do independently to show understanding of the concept, skill, or task learned in the lesson.
Identify if this will be done independently or in small groups.
Closure: Describe how you will actively involve students in summarizing and applying the major concepts learned.
Assessment:
Describe at least 3 ways you will check for understanding throughout the lesson.
Identify how you might adjust your instruction based on assessment feedback.
Cite references to support your assignment.
Format your citations according to APA guidelines.
